If / when there is a direct South Pacific crossing on *A, RTWs will be possible without having to transit North America (or Europe, for that matter). That's (one reason) why many people are hoping for a decent S. American member sooner rather than later.

That's unlikely to make a difference. Only LAN and Aerolineas Argentinas fly trans-south-pacific, plus Qantas starting in November 2008.
There have been rumours of NZ flying to South America, but with high fuel prices and the extra capacity from Qantas later in the year, I'd guess it is unlikely in the short term.
