Story in yesterday's LA Times about surfboard surcharges, mentioning BA's fee but concentrating on US carriers.
Surfboards:
AA charge $100 + $15/25 domestic, $300 international;
UA: $125 domestic, $150 or more international;
DL: $175 domestic, $300 international;
Southwest $50

, and $0 for a bike

, $0 for golf clubs

, $0 for skis
Some say it's more cost effective to buy surfboards at their destination, though second hand surfboards are frowned upon, apparently.
What was that about the low-frills operators gouging their passengers with charge upon surcharge unlike the majors?

$0 for golf clubs on good old Southwest sounds great value for me.
