(This is kind of a follow-up to my post here. I've decided to Hire from Hertz in California, found a great IBM staff rate that includes the following supplements (I'll still have to pay for being young on top of this, alas!);

Rate Includes:
  • hotel concession fee recovery
  • loss damage waiver
  • tax
  • liability insurance supplement
  • vehicle licensing cost recovery
  • transaction fee
  • califonia tourism commission assessment

Now, I called Hertz Gold support and the chap said "Don't worry, you're covered" - it sounds too good to be true... even the Hertz Terms and Conditions seem great...

Just wanted to pick the collective wisdom of the people on this forum really as I've never rented in the USA and the whole concept of rental seems quite different (In the UK you have insurance, but if there is an accident you have to pay an 'excess' which can be quite expensive.

As far as I read the t&cs it seems that if I have an accident I'm covered. So in a worse case scenario -, hypothetically, I drive the hire car I'm driving into a $100k mercedes and it is my fault, the other driver is seriously injured and has $100k of medical bills (with any associated legal costs) and I write off the hire car (cost $40k)

As far as I read I'm covered by the rate I've been offered, and in the scenario above, I won't have to pay a dime and Hertz will take care of it? (I'm assuming I haven't done anything to invalidate the insurance such as drink alcohol) I'm also concerned about the limit of liability but it looks to be about $1million so that seems fine.

I guess what I'm really asking is - if I take this rate, do I need any other insurance/cover? (I already have personal accident insurance through my travel insurance)?

Thanks if you are able to offer any advice,

lv

PS: My credit card provides no additional insurance cover
Based on what you are saying it sounds as if you will be on a business/official rental and therefore will be covered.
IBM has a great deal with Hertz.
Just make sure that bring IBM I.D., I know as a counter rep. I was trained to always verify company I.D. and I followed that policy rather strickly.
Cheers!
