truth is, the hotels all over BKK seem like a good value in general and it seems like a busy-enough area. I live in a super-quiet suburb and don't mind having 4 days/nights in the middle of the city. A 5-10 min walk to the Skytrain/metro is fine with me, I love walking and this is my vacation, not a business trip.
And I'm not against such... friendliness... but that sort of "friendliness" is all over BKK, from what I've been told.
Why do you need you feel to defend yourself? The SGS and WGS are wonderful hotels and you are unlikely to feel any awkwardness with regards to how friendly or unfriendly they are towards unregistered guests. These aren't low budget fleabag hotels with loud guests traipsing half naked through the lobby. These are high end hotels which regularly host huge wedding receptions for Thai families, corporate events, etc. Many times I've seen a bride in the elevator with other family members. The location of both properties is simply perfect. You are right on the junction between the BTS or SkyTrain and MRS (?) or subway. It is pretty easy to get anywhere you want.
