It was very convenient for us, and it allowed us to get a lot of the airport hassle out of the way early in the day. With BA's baggage reputation we also don't want to risk checking in a bag only 45 mins before flight time.
So, why didn't they tell us they are changing in a non user friendly way? That is what really pisses me off (pardon the expression). I thought they would want to improve things, not make them worse than they already are.
If the staff in GVA have indeed been accepting bags as you suggest they have been breaching both BA and regulatory policies for checked baggage. It may be that there were a few staff in GVA who were thick enough to do this, BA would not know that they are doing this and so would not communicate that this should not happen. Depending on the airport checking bags in too early can be as bad as too late, and the passenger must always present the bags themselves and have been in control of the bags from packing to checkin. Sorry if that is a pain, but it is designed for safety and security and not convenience.
