I don't even have a guidebook and I leave in 9 days truth is, the hotels all over BKK seem like a good value in general and it seems like a busy-enough area. I live in a super-quiet suburb and don't mind having 4 days/nights in the middle of the city. A 5-10 min walk to the Skytrain/metro is fine with me, I love walking and this is my vacation, not a business trip.

And I'm not against such... friendliness... but that sort of "friendliness" is all over BKK, from what I've been told.
By no means is that "friendliness" anything close to universal among BKK hotels. In particular, the LeFenix which we were discussing is NOT such a friendly hotel (although someone I know has informed me there is a parking lot entry to the guest elevator that can provide a workaround to the problem). I can give several other examples of hotels in that area known NOT to be friendly to unregistered guests, which many tourism sources are known to book: The Holiday Inn Silom, The Royal Benja, the Taipan, and the Chateau de Bangkok are definitely NOT "friendly" hotels that are among the more well known places in central Bangkok that are widely booked by travel agencies.

If this IS an issue for you, do NOT assume that you know the policy of the hotel you are considering. The locals themselves are very often friendly - but that cannot be universally said about the hotels - particularly in the mid-price ($50-$100/nt range).
