I don't know where or when you remember seeing this done, but I agree with the poster who suggested you must be thinking of another airline. Or maybe you are thinking of AA, but you saw this done quite some time ago?
At any rate, as others have clearly stated, it is NOT possible to do this on AA in this day and age. This is one time when calling AA won't help a bit.
