On the return, of course, she will have to claim her bags and take them through Customs, but they will be tagged all of the way. She would just drop them off at the baggage transfer location outside of Immigration.

I think carryon only is no problem...I'm not so much worried about checking baggage all the way through as I am her being able to check in in SFO for both the AA and LAN flights, so that she doesn't have to check in for the LAN flight at JFK. The flight I'm looking at right now has just over 2 hours in layover time in JFK, so should be enough for her to do that if necessary, but seems like it might be a bit stressful with the changing of terminals and all and doesn't allow a ton of room for delays.
