It is no problem holding the C seat BEFORE purchase. Problem is after purchase but before ticketing - its not possible to process the upgrade or hold the seat - you need to wait until it has been ticketed
It is possible, but the AAgent has to cancel your online transaction and re-issue it themselves. Net result is you end up paying the telephone transaction fee.
Not recommended to do this, but it can be done.
I've done this once due to the limited hours that the UK based AAdvantage desk is open and there only being C1 available for the flight.
It took a long while to sort it all out as not too many USA based AAgents know how to correctly process a UK credit card
