When did they start the NRT-NRT route?
My hunch that you'll see 763s intra-Asia instead of 777s/744s is that the US-European market is more demanding than intra-Asia. A lot of the flights ex-NRT to Asia on "big aircraft" are just that--70% full. This would mean "full" on 763. The European market, as of late, is just booming with passengers, so there's a demand to reposition the 777s.
Yes, it'd make upgrades more difficult, but it's the next best thing after 744 and 777. Plus, UA doesn't pick and choose routes based on how well their customers can get upgraded...
