Very well said. Of course, AF has a history of "French elegance" which is often exagerated and becomes a bit of an illusion. For me, I'll always choose KL. Purely because their crew (although other may disagree) are one of the best in the industry. They seem far more organised at Schiphol, with CDG being the complete antithesis.
In any case, both airlines are stronger working together than going it alone, as they are are more successful in attracting different customer audiences. Fortunately, we all have different expectations, just as I would prefer flying CX over BA, BA over AY, and AY over IB.
