Regarding question 1 & 2a: a couple of weeks ago my parents (both UA 2P) flew TPA-IAD-VIE on OS in C. At the gate they received their boarding passes for the OS sector, as well as some meal vouchers ($20 each), so no lounge access as C passenger without *G status. I guess you can get the lounge invitation at the gate as well.
