Their new partner CO flies EWR-LAX a few times a day and since they are both going to be in an alliance together (oh joy), no big surprise.

Added to that, AA flies two or three times a day between EWR-LAX so there is probably enough coverage at this point for UA to pull the route. As they can now code-share on CO and put their PAX on CO when needed.
