Though I am confused. I was going to say, well you did forget your passport. If it was UA who needed to reroute you, due to a cancelled flight, then you should get the credits. However, you didn't have correct documentation, thus you shouldn't really claim.
BUT, you don't need a passport for Canada! Furthermore you were transitting, so shouldn't require anything other than a drivers license. So, in that case, I think the agent messed up, and would put that in your note to MP and claim the credits.
