Not necessarily. It just has to unzip more than most current bags do or unfold like a garment bag. It can be only as thick as the notebook.

I saw Tom Bihn is producing one by the end of the month but it's a briefcase not a backpack, and I like/need my Brain Bag too much. Check out his site and see how the laptop sort of hangs from the top of the briefcase and can be laid flat.
