Yeah, I have the feeling in 2010 I won't be 1K and I'll sure miss the red carpet boarding and limited fees. However, the *G lounge access is a big plus of MM.

I do think UA has pretty good leadership, to even be afloat in these times of high fuel prices. Labor groups are unhappy, but when have they been happy?
UA's route structure is pretty good. Besides, what do you have to lose getting MM and *A Gold/1P for life? Seems like a pretty safe bet, as you have to take the flights anyhow.
I don't take the drastic view on United's situation that they'll be gone this year or next. It's moreso that they could be gone in 5 years. For me, I'm hoping to hold the status well into retirement (which in my early 30s is another 30+ years away).
