Yeah, I have the feeling in 2010 I won't be 1K and I'll sure miss the red carpet boarding and limited fees. However, the *G lounge access is a big plus of MM.

UA's route structure is pretty good. Besides, what do you have to lose getting MM and *A Gold/1P for life? Seems like a pretty safe bet, as you have to take the flights anyhow.
I don't take the drastic view on United's situation that they'll be gone this year or next. It's moreso that they could be gone in 5 years. For me, I'm hoping to hold the status well into retirement (which in my early 30s is another 30+ years away).
