The thing with US-based carriers, it seems to me, is that they are the worst in the class you've actually paid for (exempting Economy Plus on UA), but getting the class above at the same price by using upgrade coupons is a good deal. Plus, if you don't mind one-stop US connections, you could always go with Lufthansa and use your systemwides there. Or alternatively, if you fly enough to qualify for HON on Lufthansa to replace your 1K, that would be worth your while from what I hear.
