I have done this at HKG. Go to the ticket counter to the right of the check-in counters and they will take care of you there and yes, the agents will know what you are talking about. You should also call and ask if this can be done at the United check-in counter at the Airport Express station. If that's possible, it will save you a trip to the airport.
