"Cana" from Paraguay/Argentina seems almost the same in "essence", aroma and flavor and is certainly available in some Houston area liquor stores (labeled in Spanish, English label "stuck on", Gin-U-Wine plastic bottles).
On the other hand, don't let yourself be badly conned. Several of the cheap "white" rums around can provide nearly the same "nose", if not quite the depth of organic esters. Add sugar, lime, etc., and even most Brazilians couldn't tell the difference. Most cheap white rum is only "aged" long enough for the bubbles to clear and the thin film of fusil oil to be skimmed from the top.
