A lovely and kind supervisor at LAX explained that one holds the confirmed reservation in the system until the standby boarding pass is scanned. This is different from the CO system which apparently releases the original reservation when the standby segment is confirmed. (At least that's the CO explanation I got at DTW last week.)
To think AA would hold the confirmed reservation until
departure of the earlier flight is - curious.
