That's the understatement of the century. I could not, as a US CP, get UA to give me seat assignments on a recent SFO-ORD until the day of (and only then because I had a 1k call that line for me). The flight left with a good 20 open seats in Y on a 757--I had an open seat next to me in E+.
This strikes me as fairly silly. As an elite with US and AA, I can _always_ get an advanced seat assignment in Y, and %95 of the time get an exit row or bulkhead assigned. UA is far too optimistic about the number of last minute tickets they think they might sell.
