I would transfer the miles to AA because:
- if you are going in Jun 09 the 30 day advantage has already passed. AA can book awards 330 days out. QF can book a full year out.
- you will have to pay a substantial fuel surcharge if you use QF miles for a QF flight. There is no fuel surcharge if you use AA miles for the same QF flight.
- AA requires fewer miles for a ticket to Australia than QF.
- Both AA and QF will let you stop in Fiji by using Air Pacific. However QF will charge you extra points (and most likely a fuel surcharge) for this stopover. AA will not charge you extra points or surcharges.
- If you chose not to stop in Fiji the AA award will include an internal flight in Oz (with some restrictions) while QF will ask you for more points and again more fuel surcharges for the same internal flight.
