Delta's plan pre 9/11 was to use the SkyMiles card as a permanent boarding pass. AFAIK, that still works....you just can't get through security that way. And the key fob is just an extension of that. I have always put my keys up long before that point. The barcode that IS on the boarding pass has no information regarding travel either.
