Disturbing trend: booking fees on airline websites!

What is that about? I'm in the process of making a few intra-Europe bookings. Tried the following airline websites:

VG (VLM): 6 Euros
KL (Netherlands website): 10 Euros
JP (Adria Airways): 20 EUROS!

Priceline gave me the JP ticket net of the fee, and opodo only had a tiny charge on top of net. What exactly does this practice achieve, apart from [edited] the customer off and driving revenue to third-party booking engines, thereby reducing airline profits?
