Didn't you just answer your own question? You said it's a destination for golfers from "around the country". PDX/SEA was therefore a poor connection point for anyone not up/down the west coast. SFO (as a major UA hub) is a much better connection point averaged over the whole country.

(Golfers "from around the country" undoutedly care about connections a little more than AS miles or status.)
