Is this done automatically (with the Windows defragger, Norton defragger, JkDefrag ...)?
I have a feeling, that your very interesting comments describe what is in the books (how it should be), not what really happens?!

BTW, Jeroen Kessels believes:

It was my understanding too, that placing your most used programs contiguously towards the center of the disk is the best way to optimize seek times. It probably depends on the software/driver.
