Passenger count matters. If there isn't inventory for your entire group in 'x', the entire party is moved up in fare class to a bucket that has inventory. Or you can buy tickets one by one - your choice. This has been the process for a decade.

AA has no particular need to sell seats in the cheapest buckets months in advance. One can lock in a fare now, or roll the dice. Every consumer has that choice.
