Availability is a real problem. I suddenly realised that my partner has a shedload of miles due to expire next year (and now that we practically only use SA when I get the credit card companion voucher, he is unlikely to clock 5000 miles this year). In fact I have a double dilemma: no real reason to use a reward at this stage and practically no availability if I decide to do a gratuitous trip.

It looks like the devaluation has already taken place: you can't upgrade or get a "Mileage Saver" award and hence have to pay at least twice the miles (often much more) for an "Any Day" or partner award. Very cunning.

BTW those Australian awards are really something: 280k miles for a J ticket to PER!
