I was in Denver this weekend and rented a car - agree that rates are more expensive than many other cities. Couldn't find any decent price out of the airport. I wound up renting from in-town and got a decent price with my USAA discount. If you really want to pinch pennies, you could take SkyRide into town and rent there - avoids the additional airport expenses.
