I can't speak for UA blocking..but it is common for award space for any carrier to open up as the day of the flight gets closer if they have seats available that they don't think they will sell. Are you actually seeing availability on ANA for other airlines that UA is blocking?
I have not done any checking of other airlines but if UA's flight loads during the Olympics are any indication... flights are probably already booked pretty solid.
