On an international flight, W is NOT upgradeable using miles. It IS upgradeable using a Systemwide Upgrade cert. Still, it's space available only, and priority on the waitlist is based on factors such as Mileage Plus status.

As someone already mentioned, you MIGHT be able to purchase an upgrade at the gate for a few hundred bucks.
