I am sure that no airline will comp to top tier FF levels due to a persons FF level with a competitor. The airlines would, and have done, offer a temporary comp because of the potential business. What's the harm in a 1 quarter comp to prove status level. In order to maintain that level, the FF would have to travel with said airline excessively which constitutes in additional revenue. It is a win/win for both.
