You may have to pony up cash, but only if your fare difference + change fee > 0 (in other words, unless the fare difference is significantly negative).
So you do this all online? Is that the key to not having to put up CASH?
If this is a workaround, please PM or post here as I have been absolutely disgusted with having to pay new cash for a change fee since I've started flying CO 4 years ago.
