This has not been my experience. I use the cancel route. The reservation shows up in "my reservations" under the canceled tab. Go into the reservation and select "change flights". Done.

You may have to pony up cash, but only if your fare difference + change fee > 0 (in other words, unless the fare difference is significantly negative).
