Yes, getting AA miles is the better option if you have absolutely no use for free rental days. I do a decent amount of personal travel and like to keep some free rental days in the bank.
However, at 50 miles a day (assuming no promotion), it would take 20 rental days to reach 1000 AA miles, which, at 2 cents a mile is worth $20. After 20 rental days, I have earned at least one rental day which is certainly worth more than $20.
