I generally believe that business class in a 3 class plane is better than first class in a 2 class plane. A 3 class plane is usually designed for long haul with more room, fancier seats, etc. Often they have in seat video, etc. Most domestic flights in first are not as impressive because they are designed for shorter flights. I once flew SMF LAX to catch a business class seat on a 777 rather than direct SMF - IAD for this reason and was very happy with my choice.
