I do not believe you can use UA miles to upgrade LH flights (I hesitate to say "no" because of the "special" relationship UA/LH seem to be forming).

I do know SWUs are usable, but the threads I last read stated it was only for "day-of-flight" so you might want to pick flights with empty premium cabins right now.
