My vote would be the Westin Excelsior with a room overlooking the Arno. We stayed there two years ago and it was perfect.
We're also going in October with some friends on a very strict budget. We're booked at the Dei Mori B&B. According to tripadvisor, its supposed to be well located and great for the price. Have a grand time!
