Just a thought, I like to board first for that very reason, but come on stand back until the doors open.
I agree that 60 min is a bit excessive, but when I'm not UG'ed (usually sitting in row 5) or UG'ed to row 1 I'll try to get "in the queue" at the gate somewhat early to assure overhead space somewhere near my vicinity. While I dislike having to do that, I dislike having to "swim upstream" at my destination even more. It's even more important now with all the checked baggage fees with everyone carrying-on that isn't elite, full-Y fare or FC.
Even so, while waiting I stand off to the side of the boarding lanes, usually against a nearby wall, so as to not block access to the gate. This is very obviously appreciated by deplaining pax and crew, outbound crew, cleaning staff, GA's and special needs pax and I am very much aware of not "getting in the way." Also, if the flight is pretty low on pax loads or I've checked my rollerboard I'll stay seated (or get that extra drink in the lounge).
However, what really steams me is when I've been standing there for 20 min only to have another elite walk right past me and plant themselves on the red carpet (or somewhere ahead of me, obviously cutting in line). I'd never do it, and if I'm unsure someone in the vicinity is waiting to board I'll ask. Just rude and self-important behavior, IMO, and what can contribute to "the problem."
