He sounds like every hockey referee I encountered when I played: totally clueless.

Make sure you tell him to leave a little extra time at LAX. It can be a total zoo at the skycap line and even worse inside. And as for bag fees, just make sure his bags are under 50lbs. They are still pretty lenient about that weight and many times they'll let you repack the bags at the counter. I've seen people check 54-55lb bags recently without a problem. YMMV though.
