Post AMS: will I have to go through passport control/customs?

Whether you have to go through passport control in AMS depends on if you are traveling between Schengen and non-Schengen countries.

Schengen countries
The following countries have implemented Schengen border controls:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden

The UK and Ireland, although Schengen members, only have only police and judicial cooperation rules implemented and as far as AMS is concerned are considered non-Schengen.

Everything else is non-Schengen.

Passport control?
Basic idea: if you stay within the Schengen space or within the non-Schengen space there is no passport control. When you cross from one to the other that's where passport control comes into play. See below for specifics.

You DO NOT have to go through passport control if:
  • If you travel between 2 non-Schengen countries (i.e. you come from a non-Schengen country and transfer to another non-Schengen country, such as coming from Canada and flying onwards to Turkey)
  • If you travel between 2 Schengen countries (you arrive from Greece and your connecting flight is for Portugal).
  • You are coming from landside and you are flying to a Schengen country.
  • You have arrived from a Schengen country and you exit the airport.

You DO have to go through passport control if:
  • You are connecting between a non-Schengen country and a Schengen country, or the other way around. In other words, the country from which you are coming and the one to which you are going - one is a Schengen country and the other is not.
  • You have arrived from a non-Schengen country and you exit the airport.
  • You are coming from landside and you are flying to a non-Schengen country.

I hope this helps. Any feedback is welcome (including corrections). Happy travels!
