The Guy in Elite Line 60 min prior to boarding

I've always been curious as to this behavior, Keep in mind I'm a NW plat, usually in a bar or lounge nearby the gate, or at if at the gate just sitting down with an ipod or such, but almost EVERY flight, there are people lining up on the red carpet WAY before boarding is even supposed to begin (I'm talkin 30-60 minutes or so BEFORE initial boarding).. I'm just curious as to why? Do they want other people to know they are 'elite' members, just anxious in general, or do they really have a desire to be the first on board (so they can sit the longest before takeoff??))

Just baffles me.. But then again I'm a Plat that just threw away my plat bag tags, and rarely wear more than shorts and sandals. I don't need other people to know I'm a 'platinum first class flyer', I just like the upgrades and I don't say a word....
