Transferring an AMEX account to another country?

Hey all,

I suppose this isn't exactly a *reward program* question but perhaps someone has information about this. I'm curious what AMEX does when you transfer an account from one country to another - I'm considering getting either a platinum or an AeroplanPlus platinum card here in Canada, but I may need to move to Japan, at which point I would transfer my account; however a) there is no AeroplanPlus in Japan, and b) Platinum card is invite-only in JP. Anybody have experience with this? My gut feeling is if I get an Aeroplan, they will tell me they cannot transfer it and downgrade me to a gold card or something, and if I get a platinum card, they will be more willing to accomodate me (but how does the invite-only factor play here?).

Incidentally, any opinions on plat vs Aeroplan plat besides the lounge program?

Cheers,

-pN

[EDIT] Does anybody know the benefits of the JP Amex Platinum? The JP website just says "first, get the Gold card". I'm curious whether there is lounge access, what is the point accumulation policy, etc...
