I didn't start in Asia because the rules states only two stopovers in first continent and I wanted four stopovers in Asia.

Japan is about US$450 more expensive for a DONE4 than S Korea or Indonesia.

One of the important criteria for the OP is a short positioning flight ('coz it will be in Y), which rather points to starting from DPS or CGK. (And I bet you can get from MEL to DPS for less than A$700-ish.
