Obligation is a funny thing. By law, they are not obliged to compensate. However, when BA had its catering problems, they very much felt obliged to compensate to maintain their customer base. I hope that that is true of LH as well.
I don't think LH is there yet. At least on my flight, there was no mentioning of any form of compensation (and no-one asking for it in my vicinity). My guess would be that LH will not be offering anything for the first two weeks of the strike or so, as long as there is a lot of understanding amongst passengers for the difficult situation LH is in. It would be much too expensive for them to compensate e.g. all premium guests in a meaningful way. Just my 2cents.
