I don't know if it's automatically canceled. I had one once that I forgot to cancel until a day or two after scheduled departure, and I still had to call and have it canceled (couldn't do it online). I seem to recall the agent even mentioning that it was a good thing I did, because any later and the ticket may have been lost forever, though I'm not 100% sure on that last part.
