Besides, I can't sign a document that states that the original copies no longer exist, because they very well may exist somewhere. I can't vouch for their destruction... I simply misplaced them, if I ever had them in the first place.

But not to get sidetracked... I don't really need an official Quittnung, I just need something I can wave in the face of our auditors in case they ask. In the US that can even mean a handwritten piece of paper. It's refreshing to see the liberal application of common sense throughout the American bureaucratic machine - and I say that as a European. ESPECIALLY as a European I guess.
If you use the online tool you need to make evidence of payment and your accountant should ask for your CC invoice. If you use the traditional printout from the kiosk, you cannot photocopy these that easily.
When talking about domestic tickets, these are not VAT exempt, when talking about X-border flights, these are VAT exempt in several juridictions.
