The last couple times I've flown, the standby lists have been 20-30 people deep. Just get a confirmed flight change, get your seat assignment, pay the $50 and be done.
You've been able to use CFC (Confirmed Flight Change) to get onto a flight that eventually had 20-30 people on the standby list (as opposed to upgrade list)? I've always been under the impression that CFC becomes available for flights that are generally wide open.

EDITED TO ADD: I know there are circumstances where a flight might be wide open early in day (CFC would be available), but then fill up as the day goes on (i.e., another carrier has cancelled a flight to same destination). It's just that this would seem to be an out-of-the-ordinary situation
