I don't think that's an accurate assessment. Some fares allow routing changes for standby pax, some don't and there is NO way to know (from the info posted here) what the OP's fare will or will not allow.

The OP needs to find out the options that specifically apply to the fare s/he purchased.

You must go to the airport to actually be put on the standby list. You don't, however, have to do that before the original flight departs, but you do have to at least call (to tell AA of your plans to standby later) before the original flight departs.
