Like the OP I think that CX regional J is great for short flights. I am not sure I would be so enthusiastic on some of the longer routes it flies though like DXB and Oz.
Interestingly enough the origin for my flight was DXB - so it did DXB->BOM->BKK->HKG. I am sure some pax would have been on there for all 3 segments. I agree I wouldn't have wanted to do that though, especially the amount if time it takes end to end. Maybe it is offered at a significant discount over a direct flight to make it attractive.
